Mercedes-AMG G 63 with tinted windows, SUN TEK High Performance 20% film

Which tint percentage to choose: 5%, 15%, 20%, 35% or 50%

“How dark should it be?” This is the most personal question in window tinting. There is no right or wrong answer, but there are a few things worth knowing before you decide. Below you’ll find each percentage with real examples from our gallery.

How to read the percentage

The percentage shows how much light the film lets through. The lower the number, the darker the glass. A 5% film lets through just 5% of the light, and a 50% film half of it. You can compare the percentages in our tint simulator.

The percentages one by one

5%: maximum privacy

The darkest tint. From outside the cabin is barely visible, and the car gets a finished, “closed” look. A good fit if privacy comes first. Examples: Range Rover Sport, Mercedes-AMG G 65, Audi Q2, Mercedes-AMG GLS 63.

15%: very dark, slightly softer

Close to 5% in terms of privacy, but with a little more visibility from inside on cloudy days and in the evening. Examples: BMW X5 (G05), Audi A8 L, Mercedes-AMG E 63, Volkswagen Golf 8.

20%: the balanced choice

One of the percentages we fit most often: a clear tint and a good balance between privacy and visibility. Examples: Mercedes-AMG G 63, Jaguar I-Pace, Volkswagen Arteon, BMW 5 Series (F10).

35%: a moderate tint

It sharpens the look without the windows looking black. The cabin is still visible from outside. Examples: Porsche 911 Carrera, Porsche Panamera, Tesla Model 3.

50%: a light tint

Less glare and heat while the glass stays clear. A good fit if you want the benefits of film with minimal change to the look. Examples: Porsche Cayenne GTS, Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG.

Light films: protection without a visible change

For when the goal is UV and heat protection without the car looking tinted. Example: Mercedes-Maybach GLS with SUN TEK Carbon 85% film.

What to keep in mind

  • Driving at night. With a very dark rear window, rear visibility drops in the evening and when parking. You get used to it quickly, but it’s worth knowing.
  • Privacy. If you often carry children, luggage or equipment, the darker percentages give more peace of mind.
  • Looks. Think about how the percentage will look with your car’s colour. Browse the gallery and filter by percentage.
